Overview
Leaders today face tensions that do not have simple solutions: stability vs. change, short-term vs. long-term, autonomy vs. control. These paradoxes are not problems to eliminate, but ongoing realities that must be managed. This course introduces the Adaptive Paradox Leadership™ Model (also called the Frame-Hold-Sense-Act-Rebalance Cycle™) which combines four tools: Paradox Mindset, Tensional Leadership, Theory U™, and Act/Think.Together, they provide a rhythm for leading with both reflection and action, helping leaders stay grounded, agile, and effective in complex environments. This course equips participants with both the awareness and practical frameworks to lead with clarity, resilience, and confidence in complexity.
Objectives
- Explain the concept of paradox and why it matters in modern leadership.
- Identify common organizational paradoxes and the risks of one-sided responses.
- Apply the Tension Compass™ to map the upsides and downsides of competing demands.
- Practice pausing and sensing (Theory U™) to uncover deeper insights before acting.
- Design small, safe-to-fail leadership experiments using the Act/Think approach.
- Integrate these tools into the Adaptive Paradox Leadership™ Model (Frame-Hold-Sense-Act-Rebalance Cycle™).
- Reflect on personal leadership tendencies (toward reflection or action) and strategies for navigating between them.
Topics
- You will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives.
- In this session, participants will explore why traditional “either/or” problem solving is no longer enough. They will be introduced to Adaptive Paradox Leadership™: a way of thinking that helps leaders hold tensions and move forward. This is the first building block of the larger model that will be explored later.
- This session focuses on leading with a paradox mindset, which is learning to see tensions as opportunities rather than problems to eliminate. This mindset is the foundation of the Adaptive Paradox Model.
- This session will introduce the Tension Compass™, a practical tool that helps leaders surface these tensions and work with them adaptively over time. It is the second building block of the Adaptive Paradox Model.
- This session focuses on slowing down and sensing before acting. Participants will learn the core steps of Theory U™, which provide the reflection element of the Adaptive Paradox Model.
- Next, participants will focus on experimenting forward. This action-oriented lens complements the reflection practiced in Theory U™ and completes the set of tools that come together in the Adaptive Paradox Model.
- Finally, participants will bring everything together. They will see how paradox mindset, tensional leadership, Theory U™, and experimentation form one cycle: the Adaptive Paradox Model.
- At the end of the course, students will have an opportunity to ask questions and fill out an action plan.
