Course Description

Overview

Research shows that appreciation and recognition for one’s work is essential for employee satisfaction. It fulfills a basic human need to feel seen by others. When employees receive that acknowledgement, it often comes from managers and supervisors. Although this is important, peer-to-peer recognition also plays a crucial role in creating a supportive and productive workplace.

Peer-to-peer recognition is when team members celebrate each other’s efforts and accomplishments, creating a culture where people feel valued. Workplaces that encourage employees to practice gratitude for the contributions of co-workers often see positive results, such as increased employee engagement and lower turnover.
This course will underline the value of peer-to-peer recognition and provide practical strategies for recognizing the contributions of colleagues.

This one-day workshop will help you teach participants how to:
  • Explain why peer-to-peer recognition is important for individual motivation and team culture.
  • Recognize the contributions of their colleagues in effective and meaningful ways.
  • Identify different ways organizations can embed peer acknowledgment and celebration into their workplace culture.
  • Describe how some businesses are using structured peer recognition systems, and list strengths and weaknesses of formal programs.
  • Understand the structure of a strong peer acknowledgement and use it to go beyond vague, generic praise.
  • Create guidelines for effective peer recognition in the workplace.
  • Design a team ritual that helps sustain a culture of appreciation.
  • Commit to simple actions that make recognition part of their regular work habits.

Course Overview
  • You will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives.
Defining Peer-to-Peer Recognition
  • In this session, participants will explore the purpose and impact of peer-to-peer recognition and identify what makes it effective. They will learn about different types of acknowledgements and analyze real-world examples of structured peer recognition programs.
Giving and Receiving Recognition
  • Next, participants will learn how to craft recognition statements using action and impact words and how to respond thoughtfully to acknowledgement. Through role-play scenarios, they will practice giving authentic peer-to-peer recognition that strengthens workplace connections.
Building a Culture of Recognition
  • Then, participants will learn how to define criteria for recognizing positive behaviors, and design a ritual that reflects team values. They will also explore leadership actions that contribute to a culture of appreciation, including offering private recognition, modeling desired behaviors, and tracking program success.
Action Planning
  • Then, participants will conduct a pulse check of their organization and use the commitments they outlined in previous sessions to build a personal plan for peer recognition. To refine their approach, they will also exchange feedback with peers.
Workshop Wrap-Up
  • At the end of the course, students will have an opportunity to ask questions and fill out an action plan.
