In this one-day course we focus on:- Empathy to understand a design for your users
- Ideation to develop solutions your users’ wants and needs
- Prototyping and testing to refine solutions
Objectives
- Use design thinking to solve problems more creatively
- Understand problems from the customer's perspective
- Apply different brainstorming techniques to identify innovative ideas
- Use effective design research
- Understand the value of creating prototypes to test your ideas
- Keep your design ideas moving forward
Topics
- You will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives.
- In this session, we will outline the benefits of design thinking and define the basic design thinking process. Real-life examples will be researched and applied to a work-based example.
- Next, we define what empathy is and the traits of empathetic people. Empathy mapping is introduced, and we then create an empathy map based on our workplace example.
- Next, we take what we have learned from the empathy mapping exercise and determine who your users are through creating a Point of View and persona. This then helps us define the question to be answered.
- Next, we look at brainstorming, brain writing, and other techniques to generate ideas and potential solutions to our design problem. We finish by looking at some techniques to select the best idea.
- Then, we look at how to document a user’s experience from start to finish as they interact with a product or service. The method we look at most closely is journey mapping.
- Next, we look at low-fidelity and high-fidelity testing, examining when they are best used and why. We then explore user testing methods.
- At the end of the course, students will have an opportunity to ask questions and fill out an action plan.
