Claude Code
Course Description
Overview
A two-day, hands-on course that teaches product engineers to work effectively with Claude Code as a daily collaborator — not just how to prompt it, but how to build a repeatable workflow around it.The course is organized around a single discipline: Explore > Plan > Code > Commit. Learners apply this workflow immediately and repeatedly against one running codebase, starting with a guided onboarding exercise and building, session by session, toward a full feature they ship themselves. By the end of Day 1, every learner has taken a real change from a blank page through to a working, reviewed pull request.
Day 2 goes deeper: prompting technique against code that resists easy answers, context management, project-level instructions, subagents, and MCP integrations — all taught through practical scenarios rather than feature tours. The course closes with a capstone: a cold ticket on the same codebase, tackled with no scaffolding, that mirrors the kind of debugging and feature work engineers face on the job.
Throughout, the emphasis is on judgment as much as mechanics — verification-first development, secure coding practices, and pull-request documentation that makes clear what the AI did and what the human validated. Learners leave with working code, reusable prompt patterns, and a two-week plan for building the habit into their own workflow.
Objectives
- Apply a repeatable workflow, including exploring, planning, coding, and committing, to real tasks in an existing, unfamiliar codebase using Claude Code
- Set up and configure Claude Code in both terminal and IDE environments, including authentication, permissions, and safe project onboarding practices
- Write effective prompts for coding tasks by defining objectives, constraints, context, and definitions of done, and refine prompts to improve outcomes
- Ship a complete, reviewed change by implementing a feature, validating it with tests, and opening a pull request that clearly documents AI and human contributions
- Apply security and quality practices for AI-assisted development, including secrets handling, dependency risk management, and prompt-injection awareness
- Use advanced Claude Code capabilities, including context management, instructions hierarchy (global, project, and task), skills, subagents, and MCP integrations
- Apply Claude Code to larger, more complex challenges, including undocumented, high-risk, or difficult-to-maintain codebases
- Establish team-level conventions for AI-assisted development, including pull request templates, review standards, and shared expectations for quality
- Independently diagnose and fix defects and deliver new features within a live codebase while demonstrating the complete workflow without guidance
- Create a personal action plan for integrating Claude Code into daily development workflows, including anti-patterns to avoid and a progression path from beginner to intermediate proficiency
Audience
Prerequisites
-
All attendees should meet the following prerequisites:
- Working proficiency in at least one modern programming language (matching the course's sample repository stack)
- Comfort with git and pull-request workflows, including branching, committing, opening, and reviewing a PR
- Familiarity with automated testing concepts, including what a unit test is and what 'coverage' and 'flaky test' mean
- A working development environment with terminal and IDE access (not locked down against tool installation)
- Prior exposure to an AI coding assistant (Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT for code, etc.)
- Familiarity with the domain the sample repository models
