Overview
This Claude Foundations course gives technical learners a confident, working orientation to the Claude ecosystem. Participants build a clear mental model of how Claude reasons and where its capabilities sit, then move through hands-on practice with the Claude API, prompting patterns, Projects, Artifacts, Skills, Connectors, MCP basics, and an introduction to Claude Code. This course is the default starting point for the Architect and Developer tracks and assumes no prior experience with Claude.Objectives
Upon completion of the Claude Foundations course, students will be able to:
- Describe the Claude ecosystem and identify which surface (API, Claude.ai, Claude Code) fits a given task
- Authenticate to the Claude API and make first calls with appropriate model and parameter selection
- Apply core prompting patterns — role, context, structured output, and few-shot — to produce reliable results
- Use Projects, Artifacts, and Skills in Claude.ai to organize ongoing work and reusable instructions
- Configure Connectors and explain the role of MCP in extending Claude with external tools and data
- Run Claude Code for basic terminal-based development tasks and explain when to reach for it
- Identify the practitioner-level decisions
Audience
Solution architects, developers, and technically literate professionals beginning a technical Claude track with little or no prior Claude experience. Shared starting point for the Architect and Developer tracks.
Prerequisites

Working proficiency in Python or JavaScript and experience consuming REST APIs. Familiarity with JSON and basic software development practices. No prior Claude experience required.

- Model family overview and choosing between models for cost, latency, and capability
- Authentication, request structure, and core parameters

- Error handling and rate limits at an introductory level
- Role, audience, task, context, and tone as a working scaffold
- Structured output requests and when to enforce them
- Few-shot examples as the most reliable consistency lever

- Hands-on lab: write three prompts for representative technical tasks

- What Connectors do and how they extend Claude with external systems
- Model Context Protocol (MCP): what it is and why it exists
- Tools, resources, and prompts as MCP primitives at a conceptual level
- When to use a Connector versus building a custom MCP server
- What Claude Code is: agentic command-line tool for development
- Installation, first session, and the permissions model
- CLAUDE.md as the primary mechanism for project context
- Hands-on lab: run Claude Code on a small sample repository
