Engineering - Rail Projects Victoria case study - Managing large scale Civil Engineering projects using 'traditional IT' tools and methods


 

Abstract: Systems Engineering on traditional software and embedded systems projects is well understood and typically well followed, marrying mature techniques from both IT and systems in a rigorous approach involving the use of common repositories for team requirements, design and development artefacts, and quality. It is a different situation in rail civil engineering programs.
Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) has been established to manage the development and delivery of the State's major rail projects.
In establishing this project office a decision was made to adopt the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) on Cloud solution (formerly known as Collaborative Lifecycle Management).
The use of a requirements management tool for major rail infrastructure projects in Victoria is a new concept. This presentation will provide some history on the application of requirements management in the lifecycle of civil based rail projects in Victoria, the decision to adopt DOORS NG and what RPV has done in respect to setting up a system for requirements management across a portfolio of projects and what are some of the learnings, challenges and opportunities.
As well as traditional requirements engineering, this presentation will also look at the Design and V&V process, safety and hazard management, Interface management and ways in which formal Document Management systems may be used alongside IBM ELM for formal transmittal.

Engineering - Rail Projects Victoria case study - Managing large scale Civil Engineering projects using 'traditional IT' tools and methods


 

Abstract: Systems Engineering on traditional software and embedded systems projects is well understood and typically well followed, marrying mature techniques from both IT and systems in a rigorous approach involving the use of common repositories for team requirements, design and development artefacts, and quality. It is a different situation in rail civil engineering programs.
Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) has been established to manage the development and delivery of the State's major rail projects.
In establishing this project office a decision was made to adopt the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) on Cloud solution (formerly known as Collaborative Lifecycle Management).
The use of a requirements management tool for major rail infrastructure projects in Victoria is a new concept. This presentation will provide some history on the application of requirements management in the lifecycle of civil based rail projects in Victoria, the decision to adopt DOORS NG and what RPV has done in respect to setting up a system for requirements management across a portfolio of projects and what are some of the learnings, challenges and opportunities.
As well as traditional requirements engineering, this presentation will also look at the Design and V&V process, safety and hazard management, Interface management and ways in which formal Document Management systems may be used alongside IBM ELM for formal transmittal.
