Course Description

Overview

This z/OS System Engineer Boot Camp course is designed to provide students with the essential skills necessary to become a System Engineer in z/OS. The course covers core subjects in z/OS, including fundamental system skills, JCL and utilities, facilities, system services structure, SMP/E, installation, and Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) and Dynamic I/O.

This boot camp course will span six weeks to cover the core topics. Each of these programs can be tailored or customized to meet the specific client needs or serve to deliver essential learning which would be augmented through additional technologies specific to an individual client. Optional skill subjects include REXX, HMC, JES, performance management, operating a Parallel Sysplex Environment, etc.

Students will learn fundamental and practical skills necessary to navigate and work in a z/OS environment; how to use z/OS job control language (JCL) and selected z/OS utility programs in an online batch environment; system service facilities that are provided by the z/OS Base Control Program (BCP); functions of major software base elements in the management of jobs, tasks, storage, data, and problems; how to identify potential bottlenecks and performance problems; how to perform initial error symptom gathering; and how to identify opportunities and requirements for tailoring a z/OS system.

In addition, students gain practical experience in the SMP/E tasks involved in installing a z/OS product. Students also learn how to perform automated SMP/E delivery of z/OS; product maintenance with an automated SMP/E process that downloads and installs IBM preventive and corrective services over the Internet; how to use the CustomPac installation dialog to receive and install a new z/OS ServerPac order; and how to use the Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) of z/OS to create an I/O configuration and dynamically alter the I/O configuration.
